Arctic Circle / Artist-in-Residence Report Session

Following the artist-in-residence program held in Norway in the summer of 2015, a debriefing session and exhibition were held upon the artist's return to Japan. The debriefing session took place at the Royal Norwegian Embassy, where the process of the residency and experiences in Norway were shared. In conjunction with this, the CfSHE Gallery held a debriefing exhibition titled "The Arctic Circle," presenting the thoughts and practices of the residency through new works created while confronting the environment of the far north.

This report was planned with the aim of sharing the results of the creative work and research conducted during the artist-in-residence program in Norway in the summer of 2015 with an audience in Japan. The report meeting was held at the Royal Norwegian Embassy, where Yoshitaka Nanjo, Takashi Katayama, and Katsutoshi Yuasa took the stage and presented their respective residency projects with slides. In addition, Christopher Dolmen, who planned the residency in Norway, also joined the discussion to talk about the differences in creative environments and cultural backgrounds between Norway and Japan.
Meanwhile, the "Arctic Circle" exhibition held at CfSHE Gallery showcased new works created during the residency and after returning to Japan, visually presenting the changes in sensations and thoughts gained while confronting the natural environment of the far north. The experience of creating under short summers and harsh natural conditions brought about quiet changes in each artist's expression, and this exhibition was positioned as a place to share that process and its results.
