In 2016, Yoshitaka Nanjo participated in FEEL KYOTO as a residency project in Kyoto. This project re-examined the new charms of Kyoto through exhibitions and performances, using various locations scattered throughout the city, such as traditional townhouses and row houses, as venues. Nanjo created his work by superimposing the image of Kyoto that has been shared as the setting for stories with the landscapes he actually walked, observed, and collected. The work emerges as a quiet nodal point, mediating between urban space and individual/collective memories.

In 2016, Yoshitaka Nanjo participated in the FEEL KYOTO project during his residency in Kyoto. FEEL KYOTO is a project that uses traditional townhouses, row houses, and renovated shops scattered throughout the western part of Kyoto as venues, uncovering the charm of places that are not yet fully known through exhibitions and performances. Viewers are encouraged to do more than just appreciate the artwork; they should walk through the city, deepening their experience by touching the layers of atmosphere and time.
In Kyoto, where redevelopment is progressing while historical streetscapes continue to disappear, this project views old buildings not merely as objects to be preserved, but as experimental grounds for connecting with new sensibilities. Nanjo focused on the opening lines of stories that have been passed down in Kyoto, and explored the landscapes that emerge from the discrepancies and overlaps between the images shared through these stories, the actual scenery of the places, and even soil and photographs collected on site. Incorporating the memories and imaginations of visitors into the production, he attempts to create an expression that moves back and forth between story and reality, past and present. This work is a residency project that reconnects scattered places and individual memories, and re-examines the time and culture inherent in the city of Kyoto.
