Open studio

The "Sagamihara Art 03 Open Studio Exhibition" was held as an attempt to open up the creative spaces of artists scattered throughout Sagamihara City to the community. Yoshitaka Nanjo participated as a member of "STUDIO Ushigoya," a shared studio converted from a warehouse, and presented a way of creating a space where the creative environment and the artwork are continuous.

"Sagamihara Art 03 Open Studio Exhibition" was organized by the Sagamihara Civic Gallery and held for 26 days in July 2003. Focusing on the regional characteristics of Sagamihara, which is home to factories, warehouses, and art universities, the exhibition aimed to open up the creative process and environment itself to the city by opening up the studios of scattered artists.

At the time, after graduating from the graduate school of Tokyo Zokei University, Nanjo, along with four other artists, had set up a studio in a renovated warehouse, which they named "STUDIO Ushigoya" (STUDIO Cow Shed) after the adjacent cowshed. Four studios participated in this exhibition: "studio ban," "STUDIO volta," "STUDIO Ushigoya," and "ONS," with 52 works by 21 artists displayed at the Sagamihara Civic Gallery. During the exhibition period, each studio was also open to the public, allowing visitors to see works in progress and their working environments, fostering interaction between the artists and local residents.

This project, which actively opened up often-closed production spaces, fostered connections among artists while also promoting understanding and interest among local residents. This initiative was well received and subsequently developed into the "Super Open Studio," which continues to this day as a unique art project of Sagamihara.
