The Takamatsu City Shionoe Museum of Art, nestled in the mountains of Takamatsu City, will host a solo exhibition by Yoshitaka Nanjo. Immersing himself in landscapes during his travels and journeys, and receiving the time of the land at a walking pace, Nanjo weaves the soil he collects into his paintings and spaces, gently awakening layers of memory. In this exhibition, in addition to works depicting Mount Fuji, pilgrimages to Ise, and the Shinano River, a new installation using soil from Shionoe will be created, bringing to life a space where landscape and time quietly intertwine.

The Shionoe Museum of Art in Takamatsu City will be hosting a solo exhibition by Yoshitaka Nanjo, an artist from Sakaide City, Kagawa Prefecture. Nanjo's works are themed around religious views and customs born from Japanese travel and movement. He actually visits the places that serve as his motifs, experiencing the mountain ranges and expansive landscapes at a walking pace. He sifts the soil he collects there, refining it into particles the same size as pigments, and uses it as material for his works. He repeatedly breaks down photographs of landscapes into minute levels of saturation and brightness that are difficult for the human eye to discern, and uses these as motifs. His paintings, created by layering digital and analog processes, may appear very simple at first glance, but they contain various elements on different layers.
This exhibition will feature works inspired by Mount Fuji, a familiar sight to the Japanese people, the Ise pilgrimage which has continued since the Edo period, and works created in Nanjo's unique style after walking the entire 367km length of the Shinano River for two art festivals in Niigata in 2012. In addition, the venue for his first solo exhibition in Kagawa will feature an installation piece using soil from Shionoe, creating a space that invites reflection on landscapes and time.
